Education Is Entering the Age of Preservation

For much of the last few decades, the story of innovation in education has been a story of possibility.
How can we reach more students? How can we personalize learning? How can we remove barriers of time and place? How can we make feedback faster, content more accessible, instruction more flexible, and schools more responsive to individual needs?
Those remain important questions. But after several recent conversations on Education Talk Radio, I've started wondering whether education is entering a different phase.
An age of preservation
Not preservation as nostalgia. Not a retreat from technology or an argument for returning schools to some imagined better past.
Something almost opposite is happening. Technology is becoming capable enough that experiences we once had no choice but to provide are increasingly becoming optional. And when something becomes optional, preserving it becomes a decision.
That changes the questions schools, and the organizations that serve them, need to ask.
Capability changes the question
My recent conversation with Jonathan Strecker, Head of School at Valley School of Ligonier and author of Emergence, brought this into focus for me.
Strecker described two students using AI to write an essay. One asks AI to produce the essay. Another writes it first, then uses AI to critique the argument and suggest improvements. The technology is capable of doing either. But in one case, it replaces much of the intellectual experience; in the other, it becomes a tool through which the student can deepen it.
That's an AI question, but I don't think this is really an AI idea.
Capability turns previously unavoidable experiences into choices
Writing the first draft used to be unavoidable. Being stuck sometimes was unavoidable. Waiting for feedback was unavoidable. Navigating boredom was unavoidable. Being in the same room as a teacher and other students was largely unavoidable.
Some of those constraints were genuine problems. Technology has given us extraordinary opportunities to remove them. But some may also have been carrying developmental value we never had to identify explicitly because nobody had given us the option of removing them.
Strecker's discussion of boredom is a particularly interesting example. He argues that when boredom isn't immediately filled, it can lead into imagination, reflection and metacognition. The point isn't that schools should manufacture boredom. It's that once we possess the ability to eliminate an experience almost completely, we have a new responsibility to understand what else might disappear with it.
I'm hearing the same question in very different conversations
That's what makes me think preservation may be bigger than any single technology trend.
When we talked with Dr. Eric Wearne (upcoming episode) about the growth of hybrid schooling, one of the interesting questions wasn't simply what hybrid models make possible. It was what schools should continue doing even when students no longer need to be physically present for everything.
That's a preservation question.
Harvard’s Chris Dede approached the problem from learning design. Technology selection can't begin simply with the capabilities of the technology. Schools first need clarity about the learning experiences they value. Only then can they evaluate what a particular technology enhances, changes, or potentially removes.
That's a preservation question, too.
And Superintendent Miles from Houston ISD came at it from another direction: deliberately doubling down on experiences that are unmistakably human—things like chess, escape rooms and experiences built around interaction, problem solving and being together.
Again, preservation.
Then Strecker talks about productive struggle, boredom, human development and the danger of using AI to produce the appearance of intelligence without developing the intelligence underneath it.
Different conversations. Different problems. But perhaps the same emerging question:
As more of education becomes technologically optional, what remains educationally essential?
Preservation has to become intentional
For most of educational history, schools didn't have to articulate everything worth preserving. A teacher didn't need a philosophical position on whether students should write their own first drafts. There wasn't another option. Schools didn't have to decide whether some student-to-student interaction should remain human rather than AI-mediated.
They didn't need to determine which moments of being stuck should remain unresolved for a while. They didn't have to ask which portions of the school day were worth requiring people to occupy the same physical space.
Those experiences were built into the constraints of the system. Increasingly, they aren't.
And that means “we've always done it this way” can no longer preserve them for us. If an experience matters, schools may increasingly need to know why it matters.
That's where I think the age of preservation becomes more demanding than simply being cautious about technology. Schools need a much clearer picture of the learning experiences they are trying to create before they can make good decisions about the tools that might change them.
You can't preserve what you haven't identified. That may be one of the most important implications here.
This changes the responsibility of education companies, too
There's another side to this. For years, the value story for an education solution has understandably emphasized what it improves or removes: More access. Less administrative work. Faster feedback. Greater personalization. Easier implementation. More students served. Better data. Less time.
Those things matter. But if schools begin evaluating technology partly by the learning experience they want to preserve, then education companies need to be capable of answering a different kind of question:
What does your solution deliberately leave intact?
If a product makes writing easier, what intellectual work remains with the student?
If it automates teacher tasks, where does teacher judgment remain essential?
If it allows students to learn independently, how does it preserve the interaction or collaboration the learning model requires?
If it scales an experience, what doesn't get diluted as it scales?
That's not defensive messaging. It's a potentially powerful expression of product value.
In fact, this is where something we've been developing through InflectionED becomes more than a line on a content card:
Tell educators what friction your solution removes. Tell them what friction it protects, too.
A company that can clearly articulate what its product preserves is also telling schools something about what it believes good learning requires. And a school that knows what it needs to preserve becomes a much more sophisticated buyer.
Remove. Enable. Preserve.
When considering a technology, model, program or policy, ask three questions:
What does it remove?
Which barriers, unnecessary friction, constraints or burdens can disappear?
What does it enable?
What can students and educators now do that was difficult or impossible before?
What does it preserve?
Which experiences, relationships, responsibilities or forms of thinking remain essential even though we now have the capability to bypass them?
The third question is becoming more important precisely because the first two are becoming easier to answer. Technology will continue getting better at removing and enabling. Education has to get better at preserving.
Preservation isn't resistance
There is a danger in the word preservation. It can sound like an argument for protecting existing institutions simply because they exist. That's not what I mean.
Some friction should disappear. Some traditional practices deserve to disappear. Some things schools once considered essential were artifacts of limited technology, limited resources or outdated assumptions. Preservation should have to earn its place.
The question isn't What have we always done? It's What does learning still require?
And answering that may require schools to become more explicit about learning than they've ever needed to be.
Strecker argues for development across intellectual, social, emotional, ethical and physical dimensions rather than defining education solely through narrow academic production. Once the desired experience becomes that broad, technology decisions look different.
The question is no longer simply whether something produces an academic outcome efficiently. It is what happens to the human being while getting there.
That may be why these seemingly separate conversations keep converging.
Hybrid learning asks what deserves physical presence. AI asks what thinking students should continue doing themselves. Screen-time debates ask which experiences screens may be displacing. Learning science asks which forms of struggle, interaction, reflection and practice actually produce development.
All of them point toward a world in which preservation is no longer passive. It becomes part of design. And perhaps that's the real shift.
